Acute Medicine

Acute Medicine is the immediate specialist management of adults with a wide range of medical conditions who come into hospital as emergencies.

We recognise the demands of admitting and managing acutely ill patients and aim to provide the lowest possible waiting times in Accident & Emergency without compromising on quality of service or treatment.

We treat patients who need short-term hospital treatment because of an acute (sudden and severe) illness. We provide rapid specialist assessment and treatment, and see people who need medical rather than surgical care. Patients are referred to us by the Emergency Department or by their GP.

Here the patient has required admission to undergo further assessment, investigation and treatment. Our aim is to, within 4 – 24 hours, have completed the patient's treatment and discharge the patient or if ongoing treatment is required to transfer the patient to the most appropriate area. This may be within the unit to the short stay area, if discharge is predicted within 72 hours.
