The Surgical Day Case Unit is a 10 bedded unit (13 on Wednesdays) which is open from 07:00 - 20:30 Monday to Friday.
The unit is bright and clean with two four bedded bays, two single rooms and an extra three-bedded bay on Wednesdays. There is also a waiting lounge with a TV where patients and relatives can sit comfortably awaiting discharge papers, medication, etc. The staff aim to make your stay as comfortable as possible and discharge you home safely following your procedure.
Patients undergoing elective day case procedures under general anaesthetic are nursed on the unit. There are two qualified nurses and one healthcare assistant on each shift (three qualified nurses on Wednesdays).
The unit caters for a wide range of specialities which include general surgery, gynaecology, orthopaedics, urology, ENT, maxillofacial and plastics.
On arrival to the unit your relative will be given a time to ring for an update and expected time for planned discharge home so that arrangements can be made to collect you.
The advantages of day case surgery ensures minimal disruption to your day and enables you to be discharged as soon as is safely possible following your procedure. It is stipulated that if you have a general anaesthetic you will need to have somebody with you for 24 hours after. Handwashing facilities are available on entering and leaving the unit.
You can ask any member of staff if you have any questions or require further information.
