Urology

Urology is the field of medicine that focuses on the urinary tract and the male genital organs. 

The urinary tract consists of the kidneys, bladder, ureters, urethra.The organs covered by urology include the kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra, male reproductive organs (testes, epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicles, prostate and penis).

At East Cheshire NHS Trust we provide a consultant led urology service that includes both a full outpatient service and some day case procedures. The Urology Department is a shared service with Stepping Hill and Tameside where you may be referred for specialist treatment if necessary.

Outpatient appointments

How to find us

From the main hospital entrance, head towards the Outpatients Department where all clinics are clearly labelled with the consultant name.

Your appointment

On arrival at the Outpatient Department a member of staff will welcome you. They will need your appointment letter or card and any information you have been asked to bring with you. We operate an appointment system so please aim to arrive no more than 15 minutes before your appointment time.
 If you are unable to attend please let us know as soon as possible by phoning the booking centre on 01625 663333, between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Your appointments could be held at either Macclesfield District General Hospital, Congleton War Memorial and Knutsford Community Hospital.

Who will be doing my procedure?

You will be seen by the consultant or a member of the Urology Team.

What arrangements should you make?

You may be at the hospital for approximately two hours. Please remember to make any personal or domestic arrangements ie childcare. Remember to bring sufficient money to cover the cost of parking. There is a shop (RVS) iF you wish to purchase refreshments.

What happens next?

After your appointment you will be given a time and date for any follow up or pre operative appointment that may be necessary. These can sometimes be given at a later date.

How to find us

Day case procedures are performed at Macclesfield District General Hospital and Stepping Hill Hospital
 
The Day Case Unit at Macclesfield District General Hospital is located on the first floor opposite ward 7 and coronary care.

Your appointment

On arrival at the Day Case Unit a member of staff will welcome you. They will need your appointment letter or card and any information you have been asked to bring with you. 
 
We operate an appointment system so please aim to arrive no more than 15 minutes before your appointment time.
 
If you are unable to attend please let us know as soon as possible by phoning the Day Case Unit on 01625 661897, between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Who will be doing my procedure?

You will be seen by the consultant or a senior member of the Urology Team.

What arrangements should you make?

You will be at the hospital for approximately half a day. Please arrange for somebody to come and collect you after the procedure as you will not be able to drive.

What happens next?

After your day case procedure you will be posted a time and date for a follow up appointment if necessary.

What type of procedures do we do?

Procedures carried out under local anaesthetic include:

  • Flexible cystoscopy
  • Urodynamics
  • Transperineal biopsy

Procedures carried out under general anaesthetic include:

  • Vasectomy
  • Circumcision
  • Urethral dilation
