Gastroenterology

Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine that looks at diseases of the oesophagus (gullet), stomach, small and large intestines (bowel), liver, gallbladder and pancreas.

Gastroenterology Services incorporates a joint medical and surgical approach to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases including cancer. The aim is to provide a patient focused approach to  gastrointestinal diseases.

We provide a a range of inpatient and outpatient services including 

  • Endoscopy
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Hepatology including viral hepatitis
  • Nutrition support and dietitians
  • Gastroenterology ward
  • Cancer

We have a team of specialist consultants, nurses and  assistant practioners to diagnose, treat and support our patients. These include,

Inflammatory Bowel Disease: a service provided for patients with a known diagnosis of Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative colitis, for the monitoring, management and treatment of disease.

Hepatitis:  a service provided for patients with a known diagnosis of Hepatitis, for the monitoring, management and treatment of disease.
 

Gastro Cancer : Macmillan service for patients’ diagnosed with upper GI cancer, for the monitoring, management and treatment of disease.

Gastro Issues:  service provided to complete fibroscans (assessment of liver fibrosis) and hydrogen breath tests (assessment of lactose intolerance/ bacterial overgrowth)

If your condition or care requires the input of a gastro specialist nurse, this will be arranged through referral to each specialty. The specialist services are usually delivered by outpatient appointments and telephone advice however inpatients may be reviewed by referral from the ward.
