Neonatology

The Neonatology Department provides inpatient and follow-up care for sick and premature (preterm) babies.

Neonatal care

Regardless of gestation age, some babies require neonatal care. The unit at Macclesfield Hospital is a Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) providing eight cots/incubators with the facilities and staff to provide special, high dependency and short-term intensive care for babies at 32 weeks gestation and above.

Babies born below this gestation may be transferred to a local neonatal unit or neonatal intensive care unit for ongoing intensive care and later return to Macclesfield as their condition stabilises. The unit also accepts admissions from other regional maternity units.

Our services

Facilities for parents include a kitchen, where simple meals can be prepared. A double bedroom with television and DVD and shower room facilities is available for overnight use to ensure parents gain confidence in caring for their baby independently before going home. Each family has access to a small lockable cupboard for secure storage. There is a small collection of toys for siblings to enjoy.

Parents are welcome on the unit at all times while other visitors are requested to respect the Maternity Unit visiting times.

Babies will be discharged when they are gaining weight, feeding independently and no longer require hospital treatment.

Neonatal Care Mission Statement

Our aim is for the whole team to provide high quality individualised care for infants and their families utilising the best available resources and knowledge.

Infants will be cared for in an environment that is appropriate for their medical, developmental and social needs. Infants and their families have the right to expect expert care from an appropriately trained and supervised multidisciplinary team.

We respect parents' views and wishes and encourage the development of their parenting role by providing information, guidance and support that meets their individual needs. We recognise the need for parents and staff to be partners in care. We believe that this can be achieved through a framework of mutual trust and effective communication that maintains privacy and confidentiality.

We value our staff and support their development through appropriate clinical supervision, audit and teaching that promotes safe, effective and reflective practice.
