Nutrition and Dietetics

The East Cheshire Nutrition and Dietetics Service is based at Macclesfield District General Hospital, providing dietetic care across a range of clinical specialties in both hospital and community settings.

Dietitians are highly specialised Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) bound by standards of education and practice from the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Dietitians are the only nutrition professionals to be regulated by law, and are governed by an ethical code to ensure that they always work to the highest standard.

As set out by our professional body, the British Dietetic Association, Dietitians work to meet the following service objectives;

To assess, diagnose and treat dietary and nutritional problems at an individual and wider public health level, in both sickness and health.

  1. Use the most up-to-date public health and scientific research on food, health and disease and translate into practical guidance, enabling people to make appropriate lifestyle and food choices.
  2. Advise and influence food and health policy across the spectrum from government, to local communities and individuals.
  3. Advise and support appropriate prescribing of nutritional products across community and hospital settings.
  4. Maximise nutritional wellbeing both at home and in hospital.
  5. Provide a range of training to medical, nursing and care staff in hospital and community settings.
  6. Provide training and guidance for future dietitians.

Our Services

Individuals who are registered with a GP within one of the five local care communities, or are a hospital in-patient can access the services of a dietitian through their GP, hospital consultant, or community/ hospital health care professional. They will send a referral, providing the relevant medical information required for the dietitian to complete their assessment.

What to expect when you see a Dietitian for the first time in clinic or in hospital

During the initial appointment the dietitian will ask questions to enable them take account of your current and past dietary intake and weight history, lifestyle, any past medical history, current medical issues and medication as well as your social circumstances. This will enable the dietitian to develop a plan which is specific to your individual needs and situation. To assist the dietitian, it is helpful to have up to date record of current prescribed medications and any relevant medical information. For children, the ‘Red book’ containing past weight & height measurements and growth charts is also helpful.

You may require further follow up appointments. The frequency and location of these will be discussed with you at your initial appointment

What if I cannot attend an appointment?

If the appointment time is inconvenient or you are unable to make the appointment date, please contact the main department (for hospital clinics) or the GP surgery directly if the appointment is there, as soon as possible and this can be rearranged for you.
