Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Gynaecology is the medical practice that deals with the health of the female reproductive system, such as the vagina, ovaries and breasts.

Obstetrics is about caring for women during pregnancy, childbirth and the period following delivery.

Gynaecology

The department provides an extensive range of general and specialist outpatient and inpatient obstetrics and gynaecological services.

There are general gynaecology outpatient clinics at Macclesfield Hospital. Additionally, in order to deliver the service closer to the user, there are regular weekly or bi-weekly clinics are held at Knutsford, Leek, Wilmslow, Congleton and Handforth.

Specialist Gynaecology clinics include:

  •          Urogynaecology
  •          Colposcopy
  •          Post-menopausal bleeding (PMB)
  •          Pre-conception
  •          Early Pregnancy
  •          Menopause
  •          Ambulatory Gynaecology providing extensive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures           in the outpatient setting

Emergency Gynaecological services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A wide range of elective gynaecological surgery including open, vaginal and minimal access (laparoscopic and hysteroscopic) is undertaken. There are formal links with the Southern sector Cancer centre for cancer services.

Obstetrics

Apart from regular consultant-run antenatal clinics, there are specialist weekly antenatal clinics. These include Medical Disorders Clinic with Multiple Pregnancy Clinic with multidisciplinary input. Diagnostic services include fetal anomaly scanning and amniocentesis. CVS and tertiary level scans scan are provided by Central Manchester Hospital.

The labour ward is equipped with standard birthing rooms as well as two modern water-birth suites. It is supported by a Level 2 neonatal unit and is part of the Merseyside and Cheshire Neonatal network.

An excellent midwifery team provides high quality antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal services both in hospital and in the community.  The latter include assisting in home births. The department averages 2,000 annual deliveries.
