Orthotics is a specialty within the medical field concerned with the design, manufacture and application of externally applied devices (formally termed as “orthoses” but sometimes called “splints” or “braces”) onto the body. These are used to modify the structural and functional characteristics of the neuromuscular and skeletal system.
The Adult Orthotic Department is situated within the Orthopaedic Out-Patient Unit at Macclesfield District General Hospital and treats both in-patients and out-patients.
Your appointment
At your appointment you will be assessed by the Orthotist. Orthotists are HCPC registered practitioners.

An orthosis is an externally applied device used to modify the structural and/or functional characteristics of the neuro-muscular and skeletal systems.
The Orthotics Department prescribes and provides orthoses to help patients with a range of conditions.
Orthoses that can be provided include:
- Functional foot orthoses
- Ankle foot orthoses
- Knee ankle foot orthoses
- Orthopaedic footwear
- Spinal orthoses
- Upper limb orthoses
- Hernia Support / Truss
You may on occasion also be advised that no orthosis is necessary.
The service treats patients of all ages, ranging from those with a temporary need to those with a long-term need for orthotic intervention.
Some people with chronic conditions such as stroke, polio and high-risk diabetes may need a service from the Orthotics Department throughout their life.
Referral Pathway
Referrals are accepted from the following:
- Consultants
- General Practioners (GP’s)
- Allied Health Professionals
Referrals may be submitted via the following methods:
- Consultant letter
- GP Letter
- Completion of an appliance request form
- Via email to our dedicated inbox – ecn-tr.orthoticadmin@nhs.net
Clinics operate Monday to Friday between the hours of 9am and 5pm across various sites as per the schedule below.
