Research

Congratulations on your pregnancy! Thank you for choosing Macclesfield District General Hospital for your care.

At Macclesfield we have a research team consisting of research midwives, nurses & practitioners, including clinical trial administrators and the research governance facilitator. We work closely with the North West Regional Research Delivery Network (RRDN) to deliver our research to a high standard and with the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) guidelines.

At Macclesfield maternity we are currently recruiting to the PANDA’s Study; a research programme into the Prevention of maternal ANaemia to avoid preterm Delivery and other Adverse outcomes. If you are less than 16 weeks pregnant you may be eligible to participate; we would be grateful for your support!

In this study we would like to understand the clinical effects for women and babies upon taking low-dose iron supplements during pregnancy to prevent anaemia.

If you decided to take part, you would be randomly allocated to one of the treatment groups (iron tablets or placebo ‘dummy’ tablets). You would have a 50% chance of being in either of the two groups. This study is blinded, which means neither you nor your doctors will know which group you have been assigned to, although we can find out if required in exceptional circumstances.

Please click here for the Participant Information Sheet so that you can read more about the PANDA study and why it is happening.

It is completely your choice whether you wish to take part or not. This decision will not affect your future medical treatment and usual standard of care in any way.

What will we require from you?

  1. A 10-15 minute phone call with a research midwife or nurse, including completion of an online consent form, so you can participate in the PANDA study.
  2. Collection of your study medication from Macclesfield Hospital pharmacy (Open Mon-Fri 08:45 – 17:00 or Weekends 10:30 – 14:30). A friend or family member can collect your medication on your behalf.
  3. Completion of two online questionnaire’s at 28 weeks pregnant & six weeks following the birth of your baby.
